An isotonic drink is any fluid that replaces water and electrolytes and contains either fructose or glucose polymers to allow a slow release of carbohydrates to replenish reserves of energy consumed while exercising.
Coconut water seems to be one of the hottest isotonic drinks at the moment – and with good reason. Coconut water or coconut juice as it's known contains the five electrolytes we already have in our body – potassium, magnesium, phosphorous, sodium and calcium. In fact coconut water has the same electrolytic balance as we have in our blood. During the Pacific War coconut water was regularly used to give emergency plasma transfusions to wounded soldiers.
For the past two decades, most athletes and the general public think of Gatorade and Vitamin Water when they think of sports drinks. However there coconut water is a more effective and healthy alternative and a far better environmental option. Potassium and sodium are the two most important electrolytes in coconut water that help aid hydration, making it such an effective sports drink.
Potassium, is the most important of the two. One 11.2 ounce serving of coconut water has the same amount of potassium as two and half banannas Serving per serving, coconut water has 15 times more potassium than the other leading athletic drinks like Gatorade or Vitamin Water.
So, the next time you've pushed your body to the limit, or just feel worn out and need a tasty, refreshing drink, give coconut water, nature’s first sports drink a try.
